Description

This English course provides the terminology and skills required to define fundamental topics of medicine, such as:

  • Dealing with colleagues and patients
  • Nutrition and the body
  • Accidents and emergencies
  • Vocabulary for medication, pills and general healthcare
  • Medical supplies

In addition to the above, a particular focus of this training is communication at the workplace. Every subject is covered in detail, from greeting people, using small talk to active listening.

Generally, TCNs who come to Malta as health care workers and need to improve their English skills to be able to communicate with fellow staff, as well as fine tune their health care vocabulary to communicate well and confidently with patients.

Requirements

B1 level (Intermediate) in English
-Knowledge of basic English needed

A diagnostic placement test will be sent to them for them to complete. This can be accessed from our website: https://belsmalta.com/english-test/

This is then graded, and applicants are informed of their level and whether it is high enough to join the course.

They would also require certification needed to be health care workers in Malta.

Learning Outcome

The learner will be able to:

  • Acquire comprehensive knowledge of hospital departments, equipment, roles, medical terminology, bodily systems, body parts, nutrition, injuries, pain, medications, and common illnesses.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using clear and empathetic communication with patients, colleagues, and healthcare staff across various topics, incorporating appropriate medical terminology.
  • Apply effective communication strategies during patient admission, ensuring positive patient experience and addressing patient concerns with empathy.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals using accurate medical terminology, fostering effective interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.
  • Understand and adhere to safety protocols for falls, injuries, pain management, medication administration, and first aid, contributing to a secure healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrate cultural competence in healthcare communication, considering diverse patient backgrounds and preferences in discussions about nutrition, illnesses, and treatment plans.
  • Develop proficiency in documenting patient information, healthcare communication, and other relevant details with accuracy and clarity, maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Assessments

Assignment based on samples of work they do, Project work/Presentations, Homework, Tests which covers listening, speaking, writing and reading, Case studies.
